Workwise travel support: help someone apply
Workwise offers free travel to work up to the first 3 months of a new job. This includes apprenticeships.
People can apply if they’re:
- starting a new job after being unemployed or made redundant
- increasing their hours to 16 or more per week in a job they already have
- aged 16 or over and paying adult fare
Please note: 16 to 18 years olds, living in Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall or Wolverhampton, can apply for a photocard to pay child prices.
They must either:
- be earning £30,000 a year or less
- have been getting unemployment benefit
If they’ve been getting unemployment benefit it does not matter if their salary is more than £30,000 per year.
The applicant must either be living or working in the West Midlands Combined Authority area. This is any of these council areas:
- Birmingham
- Coventry
- Dudley
- Sandwell
- Solihull
- Walsall
- Wolverhampton
Contact National Express if the applicant has a Workwise m ticket (mobile ticket) or a Swift card beginning with 6335970112.
The discount they get depends on how they travel.
Bus discounts
People can get discounts on these 4-week tickets:
- National Express bus tickets
- nBus tickets - combined tickets for all bus operators
They’ll get:
- the first two tickets FREE
- 50% off the third ticket
Tram discounts
People can get discounts on four-week tickets.
They’ll get:
- the first two tickets FREE
- 50% off the third ticket
Discounts on combined bus, train and tram tickets
Combined bus, train and tram tickets are called nNetwork tickets.
People can get discounts on four-week tickets.
They’ll get:
- the first two tickets FREE
- 50% off the third ticket

Applicants need to supply proof of their job offer. This could be a letter or an email (a screenshot is fine). It should include the:
- employer’s name
- applicant’s name
- start date
- role
- annual salary
The letter can be from the employer or a job coach. It must be on official company headed paper or from an official email address showing an e-signature logo.

People can still save money on travel if they’re not eligible for Workwise. they could cycle or walk to work or get cheaper travel through:
Become a Workwise referral partner
You can become a Workwise referral partner if you’re:
- a job coach
- an organisation that supports jobseekers
- an employer
It does not cost anything to become a Workwise referral partner.
If you’re an employer, Workwise could help your staff get cheaper travel to work. This can become part of your induction process. It can also help increase staff retention.
When you become a referral partner, you’ll get:
- personalised resources like posters and leaflets to advertise Workwise
- customer support by phone, email and social media
- the chance to enter Workwise competitions
- travel support updates, information on events and networking opportunities
You only make the referrals - we manage the application process.
