East of Birmingham and Solihull

Duration: Mon 27 Apr 2020 to Jun 2024
Location: Solihull

What is happening?

Huge investment in transport infrastructure around the East of Birmingham and Solihull is underway with HS2 constructing the future high speed railway and the new HS2 Interchange Station located near to the National Exhibition Centre and Birmingham International Airport, To ensure that the local road network is fit for purpose when the future station is operational, HS2 are expanding and improving the existing network and creating new routes on HS2 land. The creation of this new road network is concentrated near the A452 Chester Road, the A45 Coventry Road and the M42 in Solihull.

Highways England and Solihull MBC will also be improving J6 M42 to increase capacity to the NEC and the airport, and TfWM is developing a new Sprint bus route along the A45 creating reliable bus connections between Birmingham and Solihull.

With all these improvements happening there will be some disruption to journeys in this area and we are here to help you keep moving. TfWM are working closely with HS2, Solihull MBC and Highways England to make sure all visitors and businesses are aware of any required traffic measures in the area and are supported in sharing information across their own networks.

Upcoming works

HS2 is creating four connecting highways bridges to link the new road network with existing routes. The first of these new bridges – a 65-metre structure spanning the width of the M42 – was successfully installed in August 2020. HS2 then successfully installed a second bridge over the A446 under a weekend closure along sections of the A452 Chester Road and A446 Stonebridge Road in October 2020. To take traffic over the future railway route, HS2 is continuing to construct two bridges on HS2 land surrounded by the A452, A45 and M42. No traffic measures are required to complete these bridges.

From October to December 2020, HS2 will continue to carry out works and traffic measures on and around Northway Island, including Northway and on the B4438, A452, A446 and M42. Most of the traffic measures will be located on Northway, where HS2 is developing new pedestrian footpaths, kerb lines and central reservations. To avoid overburdening the road network, different stretches of the network will be affected at different times.

HS2 has released an Update outlining works and traffic measures from October to December 2020.

Travel advice

During this time, there will be changes to the way you travel through and around Junction 6 of the M42, and the A45, A452, A446 and the wider local area. Traffic through this area will be affected at various times because of road closures or single lane closures. To minimise disruption during peak travel times, where possible, HS2’s traffic measures will be carried out overnight, between 8pm and 6am, or during daytime hours between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

This means you will need to plan ahead and remember to check your journey route regularly, as it may change.

This page has been created so you can stay up to date with the latest information to help you plan ahead and keep moving while the construction takes place. Please check regularly for the latest works information.
